On my short excursion into the backcountry of Utah I found over fifty horses in three separate herds and some outcasts wandering alone. They are a cross between the descendants of the mustangs used for the Pony Express and escaped domestic horses of the American West.
He is the head of the herd I was following.
He let me get very close to the herd of fourteen horses, but when he was watching me too closely I retreated, never turned my back towards him, did not maintain eye contact, and always kept a good distance between us.
The horses are affectionate to each other in the same way the Key deer are.
