The tiny mammals never cease to amaze me. Sometimes when I am romping around in the mangroves, or trying to make my way across SeaGrass beach, our paths cross. It is remarkable how at ease with humans they are, as if they realize that I am just another animal trying to get through the two feet of washed up grass I find myself in. I can get so unintentionally close to the deer that even if I am stuck in muck and not intending to take any pictures, I MUST pull out my camera and not let the opportunity pass. Other times I am walking in the tropical forest and follow their footprints under long canopies of buttonwoods exactly their height, not ever higher than three feet. We scare each other when we meet, which always makes me laugh.
“You scared me!” I always say, as if they understand.
