I am delighted to see the fawning season extended as the little deer emerge from their hiding dens in the woods. There were two fawns with this doe in northern Big Pine Key, having spotted them on my way to the marsh. Having twins appears to be as common as a singular birth as I have seen many sets since May.
Conditions in the marsh were less than ideal as there seemed to be hundreds of biting, stinging insects resistant to insectide swarming over me. This was the only deer I saw as the herd I have been following for weeks now is dissipating and moving on, or they were hiding in the woods unbeknownst to me.
I leave the deer refuge behind for a short excursion into the West seeking out the last of the wild horses, inspired by the photographs of my facebook friends.
